Center of Applied A.I. for Sustainable Agriculture (CAAI4SA) Presentations - October 9, 2026
Published October 9, 2026.
Highlighting the center’s continuous progress since its inception in 2024, CAAI4SA Director Dr. Joe Maja presented comprehensive research and outreach updates to the research and extension staff at SC State University 1890 Research and Extension. During his presentation, Dr. Maja underscored how the cutting-edge agricultural technologies developed by the center are directly aligned with the practical, everyday needs of growers and agricultural producers. Furthermore, he emphasized the vital need to bridge the knowledge gap by actively educating the farming community on precision agriculture innovations through a multifaceted outreach strategy that encompasses peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, magazine articles, and dedicated digital platforms.
Dr. Joe Mari Maja outlined CAAI4SA’s current research initiatives, highlighting the UAV-RFID Plant Inventory System, robotic cotton harvesting, pulse-width modulation (PWM) controlled precision defoliation, and hyperspectral imaging for crop water stress detection. He emphasized key research findings disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, alongside complementary outreach efforts. Specifically, he underscored the value of translating precision agriculture technologies to growers via practical initiatives, including Part 107 Remote Pilot Exam preparation workshops, informative webinars, and hands-on field demonstrations.
Finally, Dr. Maja emphasized that the true return on investment for the center’s research stems from measurable, tangible impacts delivered directly to growers, including increased crop yields, enhanced product quality, reduced operational expenses, and long-term ecological resilience.
